Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Philippines

The sustainable management of the ecosystem of the Philippine coastline - mangrove forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds and sandy meaches, to name a few - plays an important role in poverty reduction in this country.

In Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, more than half of the population live in the coastal zone and many more depend on its products, such as food, building materials and the protection it provides against wave action, erosion and storms.

Worm, Wormer, Compost Parade .

In the Lonely Planet travel guide about the Philippines you can find the sentence: "Filipinos don't need much of an excuse to hold a festival." Being here as a Junior Expert for the German Development Service involved in Education and Composting projects in the Philippines for more than six months, I can only support this without hestitation.

"From Trash to Cash" Creating income opportunities and public awareness in Ormoc City, Leyte .

It's a nice and somewhat suprising little story to tell. Walking open-eyed through Ormoc City, one day in April 2009, a bunch of recycled paper bags hanging outside a shanty struck my sight. Small Scale Solutions for Reducing Emission of Greenhouse Gases .

In April 2009, the "Forum for the Future", a charity organization with the aim of supporting sustainable development, announced the winner of its 75,000 Dollar prize. Criteria for wining this green competition were to support concepts that have "moved off the drawing board and demonstrated their feasibility" for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but are not supported by industry. This year the prize was awarded to the inventor of the "Kyoto Box", a solar cooker in very easy design. For DED Philippines this is encouraging indeed, because here, too, solar cookers are being propagated.
